In this interview with Dr Jennifer Hanners Gutierrez, there's an exploration of the SPIKES protocol, which comes from the medical word and gives touch points for sharing difficult news with the students/clients and families we work with.
SPIKES Acronym Summary
S - setting up the interview, build rapport, build trust, be responsive
P - perception, ask the person how they perceive the current status of what will be discussed (ex - their latest medical test results, evaluation results, their child’s communication)
I - invitation, the provider says they have something to add about the topic and asks if that’s something the person is open to discussing now. If not, reschedule - if so, continue the conversation.
K - professional offers knowledge, sharing it in chunks, making it understandable, and checking for understanding
E - Empathy
